What option are available for Video Conferencing and Collaboration Software at ACC

Video Conferencing Solutions at ACC:

ACC offers many different solutions for video conferencing. The following will give a brief description of each and some suggestions as to when you might use each one.

 

Cisco WebEx:

WebEx is a powerful business meeting video conferencing tool. Accessible from https://cccs-meetings.webex.com.

WebEx Advantages:

  • Good for “business style” meetings.
  • Is a resource that all ACC employees currently have full access to.
  • Integrates with Microsoft Outlook and many other ACC digital resources.
  • Good when both the local and remote participants need to share content. 
  • Required in spaces that have a legacy Telepresence system (i.e. M1950, M2915, CSB3080).
  • Provides call in numbers so that participants can call in without a computer. 
  • Can record your meetings
  • Easy for non-ACC participants to join

WebEx Disadvantages:

  • Can be less stable or real time than other platforms.
  • Not well suited to classroom learning
  • Not particularly intuitive to use.

Zoom:

Zoom is a powerful multipurpose video collaboration tool. Accessible from https://zoom.com

Zoom Advantages:

  • Good for “business style” meetings
  • Has tools for classroom learning
  • Good when both the local and remote participants need to share content. 
  • Anyone can use Zoom with a free account (some limitations apply)
  • Can record your meetings
  • Provides call in numbers so that participants can call in without a computer. 
  • Has additional tools to directly share content from mobile devices.
  • Can be more stable and real time than some platforms
  • Easy for non-ACC participants to join

  Zoom Disadvantages:

  • To access the full feature set, departments must purchase a full license through IT (contact for details).
  • Not currently integrated with other ACC digital resources.  

Mashme:

Mashme is a powerful video collaboration designed specifically for teaching.

Mashme Advantages

  • Designed from the “ground up” with teaching in mind.
  • ACC has a current licensing agreement for this product.
  • Provides a highly real time experience.
  • Allows instructors to create virtual classrooms for every section that that teach.
  • Content can be stored in the virtual classroom and shared to students in a multitude of ways.
  • Students can enter the virtual classroom anytime to view any available content.
  • Content can be used collaboratively using the google suite of tools.
  • Is highly interactive for the instructor and the remote students.
  • Can record your meetings.
  • Relatively intuitive to use.

Mashme Disadvantages:

  • Not well suited to “business style” meeting.
  • A “room” cannot call another “room” best if each remote participant is on their own device.
  • Remote participants are locked into a “push to talk” mode
  • Participants must be added to a “room roster” to join
  • Remote participants cannot easily share content freely.
  • Requires a space that has been set up to use Mashme to host a Mashme session

Microsoft Teams:

We are in the process of learning the full capabilities of this tool. Some of the features and advantages that we are currently aware of, are listed.

  • ACC currently has a full access for this product
  • Can do team style collaboration and file sharing
  • Chat and instant messaging.
  • Can create personal “Teams”
  • Video conferencing
  • May be able to replace our current Phone systems

We are not actively using this tool across our campus, but we are looking for champions to begin using and learning Microsoft teams.  Please contact IT to learn how to become a Teams user.
